D'Alembert strategy

D'Alembert strategy is a system of bets in which the bet amount is increased after losses and decreased after wins.
Dalembert strategy in betting
The player places a bet on any amount. This amount is called a unit in the D'Alembert strategy. In the event of a loss the amount is increased by one unit, in the event of a win it is decreased by one unit. If the first bet was a winning bet then the bet size is not changed. The strategy ends when the player makes a profit.
  • We place bets on events with the odds of 2.00. The first bet amount – EUR 10 is our unit. Loss.
  • We increase the amount by one unit – up to EUR 20. Loss again.
  • We increase the bet size again – up to EUR 30. Win.
  • We decrease the bet size by one unit – down to EUR 20. Loss.
  • We increase the amount to EUR 30. Win.
As a result, we have spent
EUR
110 on the strategy. There were three losing bets, and two winning bets brought us
EUR
120. As a result, after using the strategy we made a profit of
EUR
10.

Pros and cons of the D'Alembert strategy

The bet size grows slowly.
The bet amount increases in algebraic progression – it is not doubled at every loss as in the case of chasing and Martingale strategy.
D'Alembert strategy works if less than 50% of the bets win.
The amount won will be higher than the amount lost because the bet amount grows at losses. For the strategy to make a profit, 30% of wins will be enough – at least every third bet should win.
At low odds the win will not pay off the money lost.
If the odds are below 2.00, the amount of every win will be less than the amount of every loss.

We have spent
EUR

EUR

What is better – D'Alembert strategy or chasing?

The odds and the winning percentage are not that important for
chasing
. The player will recoup the money lost at the first win, even if he loses five bets in a row. The bet amount is calculated according to the formula that takes the bet odds into account, so the player can place bets on events even with odds of 1.10 if there is a big bank.
In comparison with the chasing strategy, the bet size grows slowly in the D'Alembert strategy, so it fits better the players with the bank up to
EUR
1,000. In chasing the bet size grows depending on the odds and it can increase ten fold during a series of 6-8 bets. In the case of the D'Alembert strategy during this time the bet size will grow by 6-8 units maximum, under the condition that all bets are losing bets.
Let's calculate how much money we may lose on six bets using two strategies: chasing and D'Alembert strategy. The first bet amount –
EUR
10, odds – 2.00.

What is the counter D'Alembert strategy?

When the counter D'Alembert strategy is applied, the player decreases the bet amount vice versa: he increases the bet amount by one unit, if he wins and decreases it by one unit, if he loses.
The regular D'Alembert strategy provides for recouping after a series of unsuccessful bets. The essence of the D'Alembert strategy is to increase the win – in the case of a prolonged winning series the player is earning more money from every bet. However, the losses are not compensated.
The counter D'Alembert strategy fits players who, through the correct analysis of events, are capable of maintaining a winning series for a long time without lapsing into a prolonged losing streak.
