Handicap

Handicap – a conditional advantage or disadvantage applied to one of the teams. A positive handicap adds goals or points to the team, while a negative handicap subtracts them.
What is handicap in betting
You bet on Chelsea winning with a handicap of (-1.5). The match ended with Chelsea winning with a score of 3:1. Subtract the handicap from Chelsea's goals: 3 - 1.5 = 1.5, so the final score taking into account the handicap is 1.5:1. We won.
Handicap bets in football and hockey are settled not taking into account added time, but overtime is counted in basketball. Read more about the rules for settling handicap bets in other sports in the

How are handicap bets settled?

It depends on the value and whether it's + or -. The value shows the number of goals or points the final score will change by, and the plus/minus sign shows in which direction.

Positive handicap

When a handicap is positive, the value is added to the final score.
  1. You bet on Tottenham winning with a handicap of (+1).
  2. Tottenham tied with a score of 1:1.
  3. Now add the handicap to the number of Tottenham goals: 1 + 1 = 2. Match score – 2:1.
  4. A win taking the handicap into account means the bet wins.

Negative handicap

When a handicap is negative, the value is subtracted from the final score.
  1. You bet on Liverpool winning with a handicap of (-1.5).
  2. The match ends with Liverpool winning 3:1.
  3. Taking into account the handicap, the number of Liverpool goals is: 3 - 1.5 = 1.5.
  4. The match score with the handicap still had Liverpool winning 1:1.5, so the bet wins.

Fraction handicap

A fraction handicap ends in ".5":
  • +0.5
  • +1.5
  • -2.5
  • +3.5
Fraction handicaps have two selections: loss and win. If the team you selected wins with a handicap, then the bet wins, but if not, it will be settled as a loss.
You bet on Lokomotiv to win with a handicap of -1.5. Possible bet results:
  • A win with a goal difference of two or more – win.
  • A win with a difference of one goal – loss.
  • A draw or a loss – loss.

Integer handicap

A whole number handicap is a whole number:
  • 0
  • 1
  • 2
  • 3
Whole number handicaps have 3 selections: win, loss and return. A handicap bet is settled as a return if the match ends in a draw, taking into account the handicap. In this case, the betting company returns the money you wagered.
You bet on Leicester to win with a handicap of +1. So we calculate the match results where your bet will win:
  • Leicester wins with any score or a draw – win.
  • Leicester loses with a goal difference of one – return.
  • Leicester loses with a goal difference of two or more – loss.

What's a zero handicap?

A zero handicap is insurance against a draw. For a zero handicap bet to win, the chosen team must win with any score. In the event of a loss, the bet loses. If the match ends in a draw, the bet is settled as a return.
You bet on Liverpool winning with a handicap of (0). Here are the selections where your bet will win:
  • Win – the bet wins.
  • Draw – your wager is returned.
  • Loss – the bet loses.
A zero handicap is similar to betting on the match results. Their difference is in the odds and winning conditions.

A zero handicap has less risk than match result. If the match ends in a draw, a bet on a match result loses, but with a handicap of (0), you get your money back. Risk size, risk influences odds: odds on a zero handicap bets are always lower than on a match result.

How are handicap (+0,5) and (-0,5) bets settled?

Bets on a handicap (+0,5) win when the selected team wins or the match ends in a draw. This is similar to a double chance bet. A handicap (-0.5) will only take place if the selected team wins.
You bet on Tamps winning with a handicap of (+0.5). We settle at what outcomes the bet will win:
  • A Tampa win no matter the score – the bet wins.
  • Tampa ended regular time with a score of 2:2 – the bet wins because after taking the handicap into account, the score was 2.5:2 in favour of Tampa.
  • A Tampa loss no matter the score – the bet loses. Even if Tampa lost 1:2, after taking into account the handicap, the score will be 1.5:2.

What is an Asian handicap?

An Asian handicap resembles a number ending in ".25" or ".75":
  • +2.75
  • -1.25
  • +3.75
  • -0.25
In Fonbet Sports, there are no Asian handicaps.
An Asian handicap is a combination of two handicaps. For example, a handicap of (+2.75) consists of (+2.5) and (+3), and a handicap of (-1.25) consists of (-1) and (-1.5). When betting on an Asian handicap, the amount is divided in half between the handicaps, and the odds of each component are the same as for the Asian handicap.
We bet EUR 10 on Barcelona to win with a handicap of (-2.75). Odds 2.00. Check out step-by-step how this bet will be settled:
  • The handicap (-2.75) consists of two parts: (-2.5) and (-3).
  • The odds of each handicap – 2.00.
  • The bet amount is divided in half –
    EUR
     5 on (-2,5) and (-3).
Lets calculate which results will result in a win:
  • Barcelona wins with a difference of 4 points – both handicaps win. You earn
    EUR
     20 –
    EUR
     10 with (-2,5) and
    EUR
     10 with (-3).
  • Barcelona won with a goal difference of 3 – the handicap of (-2.5) won
    EUR
10, and (-3) was settled as a refund.
  • Barcelona wins with a difference of 2 points – both handicaps lose.

How to settle an Asian handicap?

To understand what goes into an Asian handicap, you need to remove or add 0.25 to the value.
Let's break down the handicap (+1.25):
  • Add 0.25 to the value
    (+1.25) + 0.25 = (+1.5)
  • Remove 0.25 from the value
    (+1.25) - 0.25 = (+1)
In other words, a handicap of +1.25 consists of (+1.5) and (+1).
Negative handicaps can be broken down in the same way as positive ones. It doesn't even matter whether it's negative or positive: the results will be the same. Just don't forget to mark the values as an Asian handicap.
Let's break down (-2.75) considering the "-" sign:
  • We add 0.25 to the value
    (-2.75) + 0.25 = (-2.5)
  • We remove 0.25 from the value
    (-2.75) - 0.25 = (-3)
So the handicap (-2.75) consists of (-2.5) and (-3).
Let's break down the handicap without considering the "-/+"
  • We add 0.25 to the value
    2.75 + 0.25 = 3
  • We remove 0.25 from the value
    2.75 - 0.25 = 2.5
The handicap was negative, so add the "-" sign: (-3) and (-2.5).

How are (-0.25) and (+0.25) handicap bets settled?

Almost the same as a zero handicap bet. If the selected team wins, the bet wins, and if it loses, the bet loses. The difference in the settlement in the event of a draw is that you'll only get back part of the amount.
A handicap (-0.25) is broken down into (0) and (-0.5)

A handicap (+0.25) is broken down into (0) and (+0.5)
You bet EUR 100 on Inter to win with a handicap of (-0.25)
 EUR 50 each for (0) and (-0.5). Odds – 1.50. Possible results:
  • Inter wins – both parts win and you win
    EUR
     150.
  • Inter loses – both parts lose.
  • Draw – the handicap (-0.5) is settled as a loss, and (0) as a return. You get EUR 75 back (1.50 × 50 = 75).
