Five teams will be hosted in Cyprus for FIBA EuroBasket 2025.
It is noted that the major tournament will take place at the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center from August 28 to September 4.
We present an initial analysis of these teams, which, along with the host of the EuroBasket final stage, the Cyprus national team, will compete for the four tickets to the knockout stage.
Greece
Greece
The country chosen by the Cyprus Basketball Federation and the Organizing Committee as a "partner federation" to be definitely in our group. The Greek national team, featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kostas Sloukas, Nick Calathes, Dinos Mitoglou, Kostas Papanikolaou, Giorgos Papagiannis, and other players, faces a challenging task. However, their ultimate goal is to return to the podium and win a medal, something that has not happened since 2009, when the current coach of the Greek national team, Vassilis Spanoulis, was in the tournament's best five (along with Pau Gasol, Milos Teodosic, Rudy Fernandez, and Erazem Lorbek).
Spain
Spain
The reigning European champion, still guided by Sergio Scariolo. Although the "old guard" has retired, Santi Aldama of the Memphis Grizzlies, the Hernangómez brothers (Willy from Barcelona and Juancho from Panathinaikos), along with Lorenzo Brown (Panathinaikos) and Darío Brizuela (Barcelona), form a strong unit capable of contending for everything. In the Paris Olympic tournament, the Spaniards finished 10th but defeated Greece (84-77), with Aldama scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Italy
Italy
With coach Gianmarco Pozzecco continuing on the bench, it is certain that every game will be a battle of concentration, tactics, and patience. Although Italy may not have a dazzling roster, they possess "soldier" players who strictly follow the coach's plan, making it tough for any team that underestimates them. Moreover, the Italians intend to bring their NBA players, such as Simone Fontecchio from the Detroit Pistons and Donte DiVincenzo from the Minnesota Timberwolves, to strengthen their roster.
Georgia
Georgia
Aleksandar Džikić's Georgia may not be a daunting name, but they are certainly not an easy opponent. Led by Toko Shengelia (Virtus) and Giorgi Shermadini (Tenerife), along with Goga Bitadze of the Orlando Magic, who recently confirmed his participation in Cyprus, and naturalized player Kameron Baldwin from Baskonia, who scored 45 points in two qualifying games, the Georgians are preparing for their sixth appearance in a FIBA EuroBasket final stage. Also in the roster is NBA player Sandro Mamukelashvili from the San Antonio Spurs.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina
A talented team but with many questions regarding their potential, despite setting high expectations for the tournament. Džanan Musa (Real Madrid), Edin Atić (Breogán), Jusuf Nurkić (Charlotte Hornets), and Luka Garza (Minnesota Timberwolves) can, on a good day, dismantle any opponent. The Bosnians have a solid unit of stars and role players. In the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 qualifiers, they defeated Croatia 110-90, knocking them out of the final stage for the first time in history.
