Maccabi Tel Aviv, Dynamo Kyiv, and Red Star Belgrade all fell victim to the astonishing Pafos, as the Cypriots are writing history!
After their incredible away win (2-1) in Belgrade, the Cypriots held the Serbs to a 1-1 draw at home and booked their ticket to the Champions League League Phase. The miracle in Limassol came courtesy of Zaza, who in the 89th minute scored the most beautiful goal of his career.
Pafos continues to amaze: in just two European seasons, they have already played 24 European matches and claimed 13 victories!
In the first half, Red Star tried to threaten by putting pressure on Pafos, but after the half-hour mark the Cypriots took control and created chances. However, they found Red Star’s goalkeeper, Matheus, in top form, saving Anderson’s header in the 34th minute, Correia’s shot in the 42nd, and Bruno’s header in the 45+1’.
Red Star took risks in the second half and managed to take the lead in the 61st minute: Ivanić fired from outside the box, the ball deflected off Luckassen, and ended up in Michael’s net for 1-0.
Once the Cypriots began moving the ball properly again, they regained momentum, creating chances through Zaza and Bruno. Then, in the 89th minute, they touched the stars—Pepe delivered the free kick and Zaza, with a stunning finish, sealed the 1-1.
Bodø/Glimt are also among the stars: after their 5-0 win in Norway, the return leg against Sturm Graz was a mere formality. The Austrians won 2-1, but the Norwegians advanced to the Champions League League Phase. Jørgensen opened the scoring for the visitors, but Yata and Oermann gave Sturm a consolation victory.
