The "German of Cyprus" will always be a living football legend!
The German striker, Rainer Rauffmann, who left an indelible mark on Cypriot football, is considered by many as the greatest center forward to have played for Omonia.
When he arrived in Cyprus in the summer of 1997, few expected the extent of his impact. His transfer did not generate much excitement, as he was brought in as a second option behind Hofmann, while his age—already over 30—and his career record did not create high expectations.
However, the pitch proved to be the ultimate judge of his worth. Rauffmann silenced all doubts, earning the admiration of Cypriot football fans with his talent and passion, writing his own unique chapter in the island’s football history.
The imposing and unstoppable "finisher" turned out to be a true gem for Omonia, delivering countless moments of footballing brilliance. In 204 appearances for the club, he found the net an astonishing 233 times, leaving an unforgettable mark on Omonia’s history.

During his seven-year tenure with the team, he celebrated two league titles, two Super Cups, and one Cypriot Cup. His prolific goal-scoring ability saw him finish as the league’s top scorer in four different seasons—solidifying his status as a true legend, whose name is forever written in green.
It is worth noting that Rauffmann also had the honor of representing the Cyprus national team. He made his debut on September 7, 2002, against France and went on to earn four more caps, scoring three goals.
Rauffmann retired from football in 2004 following a serious injury during a match against Doxa. However, he has remained in Cyprus ever since.
His farewell was an emotional moment, as he had become a symbol of the club. After hanging up his boots, he never strayed far from Omonia, taking on various administrative roles and staying closely connected to the team, demonstrating his enduring love for both the club and Cypriot football.
