World Cup 2026 Semi-Finals: Breaking Down the Four Remaining Contenders

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached its decisive stage, with only four nations remaining in the race for football's biggest prize. France, Spain, England, and Argentina have all taken different routes to the semi-finals, setting up two blockbuster clashes that could define the tournament.

With the Golden Boot race also finely balanced, the final week of the competition promises drama, goals, and unforgettable moments.

France Arrive as the Tournament's Most Complete Team

France enter the semi-finals as the only side with a perfect record, winning all six of their matches so far.

Les Bleus opened their campaign with victories over Senegal (3-1), Iraq (3-0), and Norway (4-1) before moving through the knockout stages without conceding a single goal, defeating Sweden (3-0), Paraguay (1-0), and Morocco (2-0).

Their statistics speak for themselves: 16 goals scored and only two conceded.

Against Morocco, Didier Deschamps' men controlled proceedings from the opening whistle. Although Yassine Bounou denied Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot, the French captain eventually broke the deadlock with a superb finish before creating the opportunity for Ousmane Dembélé to seal the victory.

Mbappé currently leads France with eight goals, while Dembélé has added five, meaning the duo have combined for 13 of the team's 16 goals.

With explosive pace, relentless pressing, and exceptional squad depth, France may hold a slight advantage heading into their showdown with Spain.

Spain Continue to Impress with Discipline and Depth

Spain's tournament began with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, but Luis de la Fuente's side quickly recovered to finish top of their group. Victories over Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Uruguay (1-0) were followed by a comfortable 3-0 win against Austria in the Round of 32. The Round of 16 proved more difficult, with Mikel Merino scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal.

Spain faced an even tougher challenge against Belgium in the quarter-finals. Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring before Charles De Ketelaere equalised, becoming the first player to score against Spain in the tournament.

Following Thibaut Courtois' injury, Merino capitalised on a mistake from replacement goalkeeper Senne Lammens to score the winner in the 88th minute.

Spain have conceded just one goal in six matches and continue to dominate possession in almost every game. However, against France they may need to create more clear-cut chances, as their last two victories have been decided in the closing stages.

England Rely on Bellingham and Kane to Deliver

England topped their group after defeating Croatia (4-2) and Panama (2-0), alongside a goalless draw with Ghana.Their knockout campaign has been far more dramatic. The Three Lions recovered from an early deficit to defeat DR Congo 2-1 before overcoming Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling encounter inspired by two goals from Jude Bellingham.

The quarter-final against Norway proved equally demanding. Andreas Schjelderup gave the Scandinavians the lead before Bellingham equalised before half-time and eventually struck again in extra time following an error from goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

England's 2-1 victory marked their third consecutive knockout win by a single-goal margin.

Bellingham and Harry Kane have both scored six goals, giving Thomas Tuchel's side multiple attacking threats. Nevertheless, England have conceded six times during the tournament and have yet to display the defensive solidity shown by France or Spain. They will likely need to improve significantly against Argentina.

Argentina Continue Their Title Defence Despite Difficult Tests

The defending champions began in dominant fashion, winning all three group matches.

Lionel Messi announced himself in spectacular style by scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Algeria before Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 and Jordan 3-1. The knockout rounds, however, have been far less straightforward. Argentina required extra time to defeat Cape Verde 3-2 and produced an impressive comeback from 0-2 down to eliminate Egypt by the same scoreline.

Their quarter-final against Switzerland followed a similar pattern. Alexis Mac Allister gave Lionel Scaloni's side an early advantage before Dan Ndoye levelled for the Swiss. Despite Switzerland being reduced to ten men, Argentina still required extra time to finally prevail thanks to goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez.

With 17 goals scored, Argentina boast the most productive attack among the four semi-finalists. Messi, meanwhile, remains at the top of the Golden Boot standings with eight goals and continues to prove decisive on football's biggest stage.

Argentina have repeatedly shown resilience and character, but needing extra time in two knockout matches suggests there may still be vulnerabilities for England to exploit.

Two Giant Semi-Finals Await

France against Spain and England against Argentina represent two of the biggest fixtures international football can offer. France's attacking firepower will collide with Spain's tactical discipline, while England's youthful energy faces the experience and quality of the defending champions. At the same time, the race for the Golden Boot remains wide open, with Mbappé, Messi, Kane, Bellingham, and Dembélé all still firmly in contention. One thing is certain: the final week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to deliver football at its very best.
