The summer of 2004 was not just a time for beaches and holidays.
The summer of 2004 wasn’t just a season of beach trips and holidays.
It was the summer when Greece experienced two of the brightest moments in its
sporting history — a time forever etched in the hearts of Greeks as the ultimate
“golden summer.”

European Champions 2004: The Epic of Portugal

On July 4, 2004, the Greek national football team completed a dream journey by winning the UEFA European Championship on Portuguese soil. It was an achievement no one had predicted — and yet it became reality.
With German coach Otto Rehhagel at the helm, and players like Zisis Vryzas, Angelos Charisteas, Antonis Nikopolidis, and captain Theodoros Zagorakis, Greece entered the tournament as the underdog. No one expected them to reach the final — let alone win it.
The team’s path was nothing short of legendary:
  • A 2–1 win over hosts Portugal in the opener
  • A draw with Spain and a loss to Russia, which still didn’t stop them from advancing
  • In the quarter-finals, a 1–0 victory over France — the reigning champions
  • In the semi-finals, a 1–0 extra-time win over the Czech Republic with Dellas’ “silver goal”
  • And in the final, once again against Portugal, Charisteas’ header in the 57th minute made history
Greece pulled off the greatest upset in the history of European football. It was a triumph of passion, discipline, and teamwork. Greece celebrated as one. The streets overflowed, flags waved proudly, and everyone sang, “Hellas, olé olé!”

Athens 2004: The Olympics Come Home

A few weeks later, on August 13, 2004, the lights of the Olympic Stadium lit up,
and the Olympic Games returned to their birthplace. After decades of efforts,
Greece succeeded in once again hosting the world’s greatest sporting event.
The Athens Games were flawlessly organized and deeply emotional, filled with Greek elements throughout — from the global journey of the Olympic flame to an opening ceremony that beautifully blended ancient history with modern culture.
Greece also shone athletically, earning an impressive total of 16 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, 4 bronze), finishing 15th in the medal table — the country’s best Olympic performance since 1896!

A nation at its peak

The summer of 2004 was a rare moment of national pride and collective joy. At a time when Greece was on the brink of entering a difficult economic era, these two historic events offered a much-needed breath of optimism and unity.
The image of Charisteas lifting the trophy and the thousands of volunteers filling the stadiums of Athens remain vivid to this day. It was the moment Greece showed the world it could achieve the impossible.

The Legacy

Beyond the medals and celebrations, 2004 also left behind a set of challenges. Much of the infrastructure built for the Games was later abandoned. The Euro "miracle" had no sequel, as Greece struggled to maintain its footballing momentum.
Yet, the feeling born that summer is unforgettable. It showed what a small country can accomplish when vision, organization, and belief come together. It was a lesson in unity, passion, and hope.

Twenty years

later...

In 2024, twenty years have passed since that magical summer. The nostalgia is powerful. Those moments weren’t just sporting victories — they were shared memories. It was Greece at its finest.
And perhaps now, as the country seeks once again to find its rhythm in sports and beyond, it’s the right moment to remember that yes — we can reach the top, even when everything seems impossible.
